Insult to injury
Some days
I don’t want to write
Because I’ve been
Insulted
With injury after injury
Poor Morgie
Now with
A double ear infection
Again
And no sleep
So what am I going to write about
Other than the one moment
In the car today
When Matt took “off” work
(We work for ourselves so that’s really a stretch)
To help me take Morgan
To the doc
All three of us
Up all night
Rotating baby duty
Holding her upright
So her ears didn’t ache
Laying horizontal
Though at one point
In the night
I tried to lay her down
To give my arms
And shoulder
A much needed rest
And she screamed
And sat up again
For the umpteenth time
And I exclaimed
Dear God go to bed!
Not at her
But at the world
This morning
On the way to the docs office
Matt and I could have broken
We could have argued
That sleepless type of argument
Or said things we didn’t mean
But Matt said
When I heard you say
Over the baby camera
Dear God please go to sleep!!!
I knew that was my signal
To come up
And switch baby duty
Maybe it’s not so funny in writing
But in person
And in our delirium
We cracked up
To the point of tears
It’s funny
And incredible
How laughter
Can really
Get you through anything.
I think many times
It’s a conscious choice
To choose humor
And one day
It becomes a pattern
To choose to laugh
So on the hardest days
Like the insult to injury days
You still have silver linings
And the lightness
Of laughter.
