It’s in the ordinary things
My hero.
I was grinding my teeth
And cursing my sleeplessness
And I finally woke him up
After pacing the floor
For hours
Attempting to put her in the crib
Only to wake her again
And pace again
Saying to myself
One day I’ll miss this
Or forget
How painful it is
Or I’d trade a future pain
For this
Pacing the floor
Begging for an inch of sleep
A wink
A nod
And I give her to Matt
And ask for help
Just thirty minutes
So I can rest
And he takes her the rest of the night
And they sleep but a wink
On the couch
So I can spare my grinding my teeth
And keep all my hair before I pulled it out
And sleep without a pillow over my head.
Heroes don’t wear capes
I realize is a cliche
But mine doesn’t.
We argue
Or disagree
Or frustrate with one another
But we also love
And support
And pick up
Where the other
Left off
Leaving nothing essential undone.
Love is tricky
We think it’s Hallmark movies
We believe it’s Disney
But more often
Than not
It’s the ordinary things
Like taking the baby
At 4 AM
Knowing you have
A full day of work ahead of you
Even though I have time
To nap off the crazy
During the day.
I love you!
