These are Really Popular in Our House Right Now (Easter)
Easter egg carton bunnies!
I saw these on Pinterest and I’ve been dying to make them. I wasn’t sure if Ollie (6 yrs) would take the art project bait, but it seems the new and novel experience that is open to imagination has become a bit of a hit.
I am making a bunch of these for Ollie’s class, so I wanted to make a few samples as examples before I dumped a bunch of bunny cardboards on the teachers with no instructions.
I tried to make these several times before I came up with a way that I think looks best. The first iteration looked like a poorly llama. If you want bunnies, make sure to use the egg crate bottom, not the middle pointy area that some Pinterest projects suggest—too thin and tall.
In any event, because these are so popular in our house, Ollie is making them feverishly, which means, I am an Easter bunny board factory right now.
I have added some personality to our bunnies based on what each child is enjoying at the moment. Ollie is fishing obsessed, so naturally, I added an egg crate fishing pole with some string. He drew Morgan’s and put her in a heart dress. V cute.
Here’s the best way I found to make these Easter bunny boards—feel free to add Qs in comments if you need clarity:
Cut out cardboard background and bunny ears. Make the ears big and have them pop up out of the top of the board.
Cut out individual egg crate bottoms and cut an X in the bottom. You’re going to gently pinch and press the harder curves into a softer curve and tuck the X so it’s overlapping each other a bit. Doesn’t have to be perfect. It should stay overlapping a bit without glue. Glue the egg crate to the board.
Draw the eyes, nose, mouth, and whiskers on the egg crate.
For a boy bunny, I suggest a rounded shoulder rectangle body, and then add arms. For a girl bunny, I suggest a triangle body, and then add arms.
Accessories your bunny with hobbies and interests, bows, glitter, a beret(!), and anything that personalizes it.
As a special gift this morning over breakfast, Ollie made a surprise Easter bunny board of me. It’s me— the dog on the right!
Maybe everyone in the family doesn’t need a board…I was hoping for a beret but I guess this is a more accurate reflection in this season of my life. 🤪 Brutal but fair.
